“This is the central principle of meditation: we become what we meditate on.”
EKNATH EASWARAN
(1910–1999)
People in the second half of life face their own set of issues. This is the deepest and most spiritually challenging program we offer, focusing on spiritual issues surrounding the later stages of life, including the process of death and dying. Details about our offerings are given below.
Setu Prayer
Dear Lord, please fill my heart
with love and devotion for you
and burn out all seeds of selfish desire
and sense craving in my mind.
Grant that I may be carried by you
from this life to the next without suffering
and be born in a holy family
with my heart overflowing
with love and devotion for you
from earliest childhood onwards.
– Eknath Easwaran
The Senior retreat program helps us bring this intriguing prayer to life. To find out if a Senior retreat is right for you, read this Prayer very carefully. If the Prayer describes what you desire, attending a Senior retreat will help you gain practical skills to achieve it.
You will discover how to use your later years to become established in your highest, eternal ideals: when you’re established in the changeless, aging cannot affect your security nor your ability to contribute to life.
These retreats are held at our retreat house in Tomales, California – about one hour north of San Francisco. They are more practice-based than theory-based, so you should have experience of daily practice using all the eight points consciously throughout the day.
Four days of shared practice will enable your deepened passage meditation practice to infuse your life back home with deepened passage meditation. That’s our goal for every one of us who attends this retreat – to extend and deepen our daily practice.
The schedule is well balanced, so you can take part in as much or as little as you feel comfortable with. There is ample time to transition between activities, and quiet time in the afternoon for rest and personal study.
Senior parents are welcome to attend with a child if the child meets the prerequisites too. This helps your son or daughter to support you in attaining your spiritual goals for the second half of life.
These are the most popular retreats we offer, so we recommend registering as far in advance as possible to ensure your place.
“I’ve done a lot of coursework in my life, but this – by far – is the most important class I’ve ever taken.”
Senior retreats are for those over 65 with attendance at a previous returnee weekend passage meditation retreat and daily passage meditation for one year. For those with life-threatening illness of any age, the prerequisites are previous attendance at a passage meditation retreat, or, daily passage meditation for six months and regular participation in a BMCM Satsang.
For anyone over 65 who is very active and fully engaged in family or work responsibilities, we would usually recommend a returnee weekend retreat, or a weeklong retreat instead. If your health is declining and you are new to passage meditation, here are some ways you can find help immediately:
Start using a mantram today. Read the chapter on the point “Repetition of a Mantram” in the book Passage Meditation which is available free online here.
Find many other free resources on this Web site, including a free online course to learn passage meditation.
Attend the most convenient one-day passage meditation retreat near you here. Or, if you are able to, travel to the BMCM in Tomales for an introductory weekend retreat. Make use of the sliding scale and financial aid if it helps to make attending a retreat possible.
Read the book Strength in the Storm and follow the practical exercises at the end of each chapter.
Read The Mantram Handbook to understand more about how repetition of a mantram can help you.
If you have any questions after reading these suggestions, feel free to contact us.
Half-week retreats begin on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and end on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
