Medical Information

Please let Blue Mountain Center staff know of any medical condition(s) that may affect your stay while you are attending a retreat here.

Emergency Contact Number

At the time of registration, you will be asked to provide the name and telephone number of a person we can contact in case of emergency. We will keep this number on file; it will be kept confidential.

Your Stay

Accommodations

Most accommodations are shared with one person. Couples always receive a private room. Linens and towels are provided.

What to Bring

The changeable weather on the coast can be foggy, windy, rainy, or warm and sunny, so bring appropriate warm and cool clothing, including something comfortable for meditation. Also bring walking shoes, a bathrobe, an alarm clock, and slippers or indoor shoes.

Communications

Cell phone service is not available in Tomales and there is no access to the Internet. There is a telephone in the retreat house which you are welcome to use with a calling card. Cards are available for purchase at the retreat.

Friends and family can get messages to you by calling the Blue Mountain Center at 707.878.2369 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Time Monday–Friday, or leaving a message at this number outside office hours.

The Blue Mountain Center of Meditation Retreat House is located at 25 Valley Street, Tomales, California, about 60 miles north of San Francisco. Maps and directions are provided below. If you need additional assistance please don’t hesitate to call us at 707.878.2369 or email us.

Transportation Information

Travel by Air

San Francisco International and Oakland International are the closest airports.

Car rental service is available from both airports for the 60-mile trip to Tomales.

See Driving Directions below for a detailed map from either airport.

Bus transportation is available from both airports to Petaluma on the Airport Express for a one-way cost of $26 ($24 Seniors 62+ and students up to 21 with ID). Call 707.837.8700, or check their Web site for schedules.

Taxi service for the 16-mile trip from Petaluma to Tomales is available from AC Taxi (707.526.4888) or A-1 Taxi (707.763.3393). The one-way cost is $50. While on board the airport bus, give the driver the number for the taxi company. They will call for the taxi to be waiting for you at your stop in Petaluma. When using the taxi service, please specify that you are traveling to the Blue Mountain Retreat House, not the Blue Mountain Center, and that they follow the directions below.

Traveling from Overseas When you travel by air from overseas, you will be asked at immigration to fill in a form specifying the name and address you will visiting. Please provide these details:

Ride Share

You can post your travel plans and see the travel plans of others coming to the same retreat on our ride share forum. Go to: www.easwaran.org/rideshare

  • Click on the Register link at the top of the page.
  • On the next screen, click on I Agree at the bottom of the page.
  • This brings up the Registration Information page – fill in the first five lines. (You can leave the profile information and preferences on the rest of the screen set to the defaults.)
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and press Submit.
  • A screen will announce that you will receive a confirmation email.
  • Once that email arrives, click on the link to activate your account.
  • You will be taken to the forum. Click Log In at the top of the screen to log in using your username and password.
  • Click on Retreat Travel and Ridesharing Information.
  • Click on the date of your retreat and then Post Reply to post your ride needs – or offer to share a ride if you are renting a car.
  • Please contact us if you have any questions.

Driving Instructions

Directions from San Francisco International Airport to our retreat house in Tomales.

Directions from Oakland Airport to our retreat house in Tomales.

On Fridays, allow three hours travel from either airport to Tomales, due to commuter traffic.

Driving north on Highway 101:

  • Take US 101 to the East Washington Street Exit in Petaluma.
  • Turn left at the light at the end of the ramp. Continue west through town and out into the country.
  • Washington Street becomes Bodega Avenue when you leave Petaluma; continue on Bodega Avenue for about 7 miles to Petaluma-Tomales Road.
  • There you will see a traffic island and a left-turn lane clearly marked by a sign for Tomales and the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center.
  • Turn left on Petaluma-Tomales Road and follow it about 7 miles until it ends at Highway 1.
  • Turn right on Highway 1 and go about a quarter of a mile to central Tomales; at the main intersection turn left on Dillon Beach Road.
  • Pass Valley Street and turn left on the second street, Church Street. (There is no parking on Valley Street.)
  • The retreat house parking lot is at the end of the Church Street on the left, across from the Presbyterian church.
  • Turn left into the lot, park, and take the path down to the retreat house.
