Online Program for Families

The online BMCM Family Program is designed for adults who want to share the eight-point program of passage meditation with their children. Over a seven week period, participants will study readings by Eknath Easwaran; apply the wisdom from these readings to their own family life; and interact with other participants online and in phone conferences.

”Give your children lofty ideals, and live them out yourselves. You are their first teachers.“ – Eknath Easwaran

What Does the Program Involve?

The online portion of the program – from February 26 to April 15, 2012 – will take about one and a half hours per week. The seven-week online program consists of:

  • A short reading and pertinent video clip by Eknath Easwaran. The reading and watching of videos will take about 20 minutes per week.
  • A weekly experiment in using what you learn. This doesn’t require doing extra activities, but it may require trying your normal activities with your children in a new way, or with a new awareness.
  • Sharing of your experiences with other participants online. This part is optional, but it can have a huge effect on how much you get out of the program. If you can spend ten minutes each evening reading about other parents’ experiments as well as sharing your own, you will receive greater support and practical help. The parents who participate actively in this part of the program have a deeply enriched experience.
  • Two phone conferences led by BMCM staff, at the following times:
  • Sunday, March 4, 2012, 1-2:15 p.m. PST (UTC 9-10:15 p.m.)
  • Sunday, April 15, 2012, 1-2:15 p.m. PDT (UTC 8-9:15 p.m.)

What Are the Prerequisites for Adults?

  • A regular practice of passage meditation for at least one year;
  • Regular participation in a BMCM Satsang (fellowship group) or the eSatsang for at least one year;
  • Attendance at a BMCM retreat; and
  • A desire to share the eight-point program of passage meditation with your children.

It is fine for one parent to participate in this, or if both parents are passage meditators, both are welcome to participate. If your spouse isn’t a passage meditator, you are welcome to share as much or as little of it as fits your family. Several participants have told us that their non-meditating spouse enjoyed “looking in” on the readings and conversations, and that this allowed the meditating parent to share his or her passage meditation practice in a gentle way.

If you yearn to develop a relationship with your children or grandchildren like the relationship Easwaran had with his granny, then you already have an inkling of the kind of involvement this class will need – you won’t need physical materials or any particular talents or skills. You’ll need your time, your attention, and your love.

The more you put into this program, the more you and your family will get out of it. If you make it a top priority and put family time high on your list, it can be transformative. To make the class a top priority will require simplifying your schedule during the duration of the class, so you can spend the necessary quality time with your children.

Practically speaking, if your life is really busy right now and you can’t cut out a few activities so you can slow down, we recommend that you wait until the next class. Prepare early so you can thin out your schedule by the time of the class. This effort will bring you rich dividends.

“I have felt supported by this program very much. Knowing that people were working these assignments together gave me a real boost of confidence and morale. I have found new creative ways to use the mantram with my youngest daughter. I am resolved to not waiver in the midst of family trials and tribulations.” – A parent from the 2010 class.
