The Upanishads: one of three new editions of the books in Eknath Easwaran’s Classics of Indian Spirituality series

You are what your deep driving desire is.
As your desire is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny.
– Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (IV.4.5)

Over two thousand years ago, the sages of India embarked on an extraordinary experiment. While others were exploring the external world, they turned inward – to explore consciousness itself. In the changing flow of human thought, they asked, is there anything that remains the same?

They found that there is indeed a changeless Reality underlying the ebb and flow of life. Their discoveries are an expression of what Aldous Huxley called the Perennial Philosophy, the wellspring of all religious faith that assures us that God-realization is within human reach.

The Upanishads are the sages’ wisdom, given in intense sessions of spiritual instruction in ashrams, in family gatherings, in a royal court, in the kingdom of Death himself. And Easwaran shows how these teachings are just as relevant to us now as they ever were centuries ago.

Features

  • Easwaran’s translation is both reliable and poetic, based on his Sanskrit scholarship and Indian heritage, and enriched by his love of English literature. As a gifted teacher who understands the West, Easwaran makes this challenging text accessible by selecting the passages that are most universal. This translation has consistently been the bestseller in its category.
  • Easwaran’s introduction offers a uniquely authoritative explanation of the Upanishadic sages’ discoveries and their relevance to readers today.
  • The foreword in this new edition places this classic in a contemporary context. Revised chapter introductions, afterword, and detailed notes supplement the main introduction.

Excerpt from The Upanishads |

Today, after more than forty years of study, these texts are written on my heart; I am familiar with every word. Yet they never fail to surprise me. With each reading I feel I am setting out on a sea so deep and vast that one can never reach its end.

Human beings cannot live without challenge. We cannot live without meaning. Everything ever achieved we owe to this inexplicable urge to reach beyond our grasp, do the impossible, know the unknown. The Upanishads would say that urge is part of our evolutionary heritage, given to us for the ultimate adventure: to discover for certain who we are, what the universe is, and what is the significance of the brief drama of life and death we play out against the backdrop of eternity.
